Ghent - Arson destroys telecommunication building of Belgacom

GAND - An arson ravaged the buildings of the telecommunication company Belgacom in Ghent, next to the Sint-Pieters-railway station. Police determined it was an arson.

Fire erupted around midnight, after a heavy explosion. A part of the building was totally destroyed (offices of technicians, computers, technical material,...); another part (containing the cables, optical fibres, etc.) was still to instable for scientific police to enter and see how far the damages stretch. Several company cars also went up in flames. "Damage is huge," declared a Belgacom-responsable.

The telecommunications network (telephone and internet) was not hindered, but the local network of ATM's and banks was disturbed for a day.
